Astronomy

This one-semester course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to help you understand the formation of the solar system, unique features of planets, reasons for life on Earth, properties of stars and their evolution, characteristics of the Milky Way, types of galaxies, theories of cosmology, and advantages of space exploration.

 

This course includes 17 lessons and six Course Activities. Each lesson contains one or more Lesson Activities. The lessons cover the following topics:

  • The first two lessons discuss the history of astronomy from ancient times to modern times and the movements of the Sun, Moon, planets, stars, and constellations in the sky.
  • The next two lessons describe the formation of the solar system and the laws of Kepler and Newton.
  • The next two lessons describe the role of the Sun and Moon in the solar system.
  • The next two lessons describe the causes of seasons on Earth and the reasons for life on Earth.
  • The next two lessons discuss asteroids, comets, meteors, and the tools used in astronomy.
  • The next two lessons discuss the properties of stars and the life cycle of stars.
  • The next two lessons discuss the characteristics of the Milky Way and the types of galaxies.
  • The next two lessons discuss various theories of cosmology, and advantages and disadvantages of space exploration.
  • The final lesson discusses the benefits of modern astronomy.
